Matamanoa Island

The tiny volcanic cone of Matamanoa juts out of the turquoise waters the Mamanucas. Clad with dense brush and trees it is rimmed by white sand beaches and crystal coral reefs… an ideal place for an intimate and secluded resort.

There are no children under 15 and it’s a place to totally relax with a cool drink by the pool while considering your options – to swim or snorkel off the beach, go fishing, get in a game of tennis, take a mountain hike, go scuba diving or just stay put and enjoy the panoramic view of the Mamanuca Islands.

The menu in the restaurant changes nightly and there’s a local band, which can also be enjoyed from a distance if you decide on an evening walk along the beach.

There are 20 Beachfront Bures – nine on the sunrise side and eleven on the sunset side with overhead fans and louvre windows to catch the breeze. All have two rooms plus bathroom and a patio. The bedroom has two queen size beds, the sitting room a bar with fridge, tea/coffee facilities, clock/radio, two sofa beds, two upholstered chairs and coffee table. A large glass sliding door opens on to the patio, which has cushioned beach lounges and outdoor chairs. The rooms have ceiling fans and high traditional ceilings, which are covered in Fijian Tapa and Magi Magi. The bathroom has a separate large shower, Italian tiles and granite top vanity.

The Hotel Rooms are air-conditioned and set amongst tropical gardens. Each room has a queen size bed, large wardrobe, bar unit with sink & fridge, table and chairs, luggage rack, tea/coffee facilities and a clock/radio. There is also a small patio area outside with an outdoor setting and the bathroom has a separate large shower.

There are plenty of activities you can do for free, including the use of canoes, paddleboats, windsurfers, hobie-cats & wind riders, snorkelling equipment, coral viewing (glass bottom boat), reef fishing, mountain hiking, tennis, table tennis, board games and a library to choose a good book.

It’s mostly the bigger activities where charges apply like sport fishing or big game fishing, scuba diving, or water skiing and island hopping – (to Tavua where they make traditional pottery and have a shell market or Modriki, where the movie Cast Away was made).

You can also attend church on Tavua. And, for pampering, how about a tropical massage on the beach or a facial, manicure or pedicure in your room or bure?
